The Market Hall to 8th Street SE
Adolf Cluss's Eastern Market, at 7th and C Streets SE, began operating as a public market in 1873. It has run ever since, apart from repairs after a fire in 2007 to 2009. The hall is the center of a small grid of Capitol Hill rowhouse main streets: 7th Street SE, Pennsylvania Avenue SE and Barracks Row on 8th Street SE.
Saturday is the day to come. The market is open 8am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday and 8am to 5pm on Sunday, and closed Mondays. On weekends, farmers from across the region set up open-air stands outside, and tents of handmade arts and crafts from local artists fill the streets and plazas around the hall. Most shops on 7th and Pennsylvania open around 11am, so do the market first and the shops after.
The Market Hall and the Weekend Stands
Inside Eastern Market (225 7th St SE), the South Hall sells meat, poultry, seafood, cheese, baked goods and flowers. Walk the farm stands outside for produce, then circle the craft tents. In the same building, Eastern Market Pottery (225 7th St SE) is a working studio for Capitol Hill potters. It was founded in 1963, came back in 2009 after the fire, and is run by Sarah Buffaloe.
For coffee and a pastry, Boulangerie Saint Georges (303 7th St SE) is a French bakery a block from the hall, with bread, sandwiches and a dog-friendly patio.
7th Street SE: Clothes, Plants, Rugs and Cards
Across from the hall, Clothes Encounters (202 7th St SE) has sold women's clothing and accessories since 1979, including one-of-a-kind and luxury pieces from labels such as Maison Margiela, Gucci, Eileen Fisher and St. John. Rewild (232 7th St SE) is an artist-led plant and flower studio, and the staff will give you plant-care advice.
Heading south, Woven History & Silk Road (311-315 7th St SE) is a pair of shops selling rugs, weavings, textiles, antiques and furniture from along the Silk Road. Groovy DC (321 7th St SE) is the card and gift stop, with stationery, candles, barware and local souvenirs from small makers. Upstairs in the same building, Paris Bleu (321 7th St SE, 2nd Floor) sells handbags, jewelry, scarves and gloves imported from Paris.
Books, Records and Games
This corner of Capitol Hill is dense with bookshops. Capitol Hill Books (657 C St SE), facing the market, fills three floors of a rowhouse with used, first-edition and rare books, with sections from mysteries and DC history to one it labels the Weird Section. A block away, Hill's Kitchen (713 D St SE) sells cookware and kitchen tools from an 1884 townhouse next to the Metro.
On Pennsylvania Avenue SE, climb the stairs to Spin Time Records (613 Pennsylvania Ave SE, 2nd Floor), which focuses on DC music: go-go, soul, jazz, hip hop and punk, mostly new pressings, so local artists get paid on each sale. Little District Books (631 Pennsylvania Ave SE) is a queer-owned bookstore devoted to LGBTQ+ authors, open 11am to 6pm on Saturdays. East City Bookshop (645 Pennsylvania Ave SE #100) sells new books for all ages plus toys and art supplies, and shares its building with Labyrinth Games & Puzzles (645 Pennsylvania Ave SE), for board games, card games and jigsaws.
If you want a styling session, The C.A.T.Walk Boutique (700 Pennsylvania Ave SE) shows international designer womenswear by appointment only; text or send an Instagram message ahead.
Barracks Row on 8th Street SE
Barracks Row runs south on 8th Street SE from Pennsylvania Avenue. Union Kitchen Grocery (430 8th St SE) is run by the DC food-business accelerator and stocks products from local food startups, so it is a good place for edible gifts. DCanter (545 8th St SE) is a wine shop built around personal recommendations. Dog owners should stop at Howl to the Chief! (719 8th St SE) for natural pet food, US-made treats and self-serve dog wash bays.
Tip: Most shops here do not post hours online. Plan the market for the morning, browse from 11am and call ahead for any shop you are set on.
Dinner on Barracks Row
End the day at Rose's Luxury (717 8th St SE), a converted Barracks Row townhouse with an upstairs bar. It holds a star in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide for its family-style prix fixe. Next door, Pineapple and Pearls (715 8th St SE) serves Aaron Silverman's tasting menu, and Little Pearl (921 Pennsylvania Ave SE) is from the Rose's Luxury team; both are starred too, as is Omakase at Barracks Row (522 8th St SE), a sushi counter up a metal staircase.
Metro and the Sunday Flea
Take the Blue, Orange or Silver line to Eastern Market station, about a block from the market hall. Public parking is limited, so Metro or bus is the practical way in on weekends.
If you can stay the weekend, the Flea Market at Eastern Market (7th St SE & C St SE) sets up beside the hall every Sunday, year round, from 9am to 4pm. It does not run on Saturdays.
