American is a residential campus on Ward Circle, where Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues meet in Northwest DC. There is no shopping strip at the gates. Students walk or take the free AU shuttle to Tenleytown, and from there the stores run up Wisconsin Avenue. So in this guide, "near" means walking distance plus the short ride students actually use: Tenleytown, Spring Valley, Cathedral Commons and Friendship Heights.
Tenleytown is the everyday stop. The AU shuttle's Metro stop is at 40th and Albemarle Streets, right by Whole Foods Market Tenley Town (4530 40th St NW). Tenleytown Ace Hardware (4500 Wisconsin Ave NW) handles anything a dorm room is missing. A few blocks north, Tenley Provisions (4700 Wisconsin Ave NW) opened in June 2026 in the old Steak 'n Egg space with three places to eat under one roof.
Spring Valley is the other direction, farther out Massachusetts Avenue from the main campus. Crate & Barrel Spring Valley (4820 Massachusetts Ave NW) is the anchor there for kitchen and bedding.
Friendship Heights is one Red Line stop north of Tenleytown–AU, at the DC–Maryland line. It is the big-errand stop: T.J. Maxx (5300 B Wisconsin Ave NW), Trader Joe's (5335 Wisconsin Ave NW), Bloomingdale's Chevy Chase (5300 Western Ave) and a second Whole Foods. Our full Friendship Heights guide covers it block by block.
Official AU gear lives at the American University Campus Store, in the Lydecker Tunnel on campus. It is the place for sweatshirts, gifts and course materials. The university's retail page lists its phone as (202) 885-6300 and sends you to the store's own website for hours, so check there or call ahead before parents' weekend.
Next door in the same tunnel is The UPS Store (202-885-2030), useful for shipping winter clothes home or a box of books at the end of the year.
- Whole Foods Market Tenley Town (4530 40th St NW) is the closest full grocery to campus, open daily 7am to 10pm.
- Tenleytown Ace Hardware (4500 Wisconsin Ave NW) has housewares, cleaning supplies, electrical, paint and tools. Think extension cords, hooks and a shower caddy. It is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 6pm Sunday.
- Crate & Barrel Spring Valley (4820 Massachusetts Ave NW) is where a parent buys the good sheets, mugs and a first set of pots for an apartment. Open until 8pm Monday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm Sunday.
- Trader Joe's (5335 Wisconsin Ave NW) in Friendship Heights opened in December 2025 and runs 9am to 9pm daily. Frozen meals, snacks and cheap flowers.
- T.J. Maxx (5300 B Wisconsin Ave NW) sells discounted home goods, towels, clothing and beauty. Hours are not posted, so call ahead.
- Rodman's (5100 Wisconsin Ave NW) is a long-running family discount store with groceries, pharmacy items and brand-name goods, on the DC side between Tenleytown and Friendship Heights.
Closest to campus, clothes shopping happens in Friendship Heights. Bloomingdale's Chevy Chase (5300 Western Ave) covers clothing, shoes and beauty, and it has an AllSaints shop inside. T.J. Maxx is the budget option for a last-minute interview outfit or a winter coat. Talbots (5320 Western Ave) and Eileen Fisher (5330 Western Ave) sit side by side on Western Avenue for workwear basics, handy before an internship on the Hill.
Tenleytown does not have a used bookstore, record shop or vintage store we could confirm. For those, ride the Red Line. The closest options are in the last section below.
- American University Campus Store (Lydecker Tunnel): official AU apparel and gifts. The obvious parents' weekend stop.
- Whyte House Monograms (5447 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase): monogrammed totes, linens and personalized presents. Open weekdays 10am to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm, closed Sundays.
- Tiffany & Co. (5481 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase): the classic graduation gift, with engraving offered in store.
- Charles Schwartz & Son (5454 Wisconsin Ave, Ste 404): a jeweler on the fourth floor of an office building across from The Collection, so look upstairs.
- Le Creuset (5481 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase): a Dutch oven for the graduate moving into a first apartment. The shop opened in August 2026.
- Total Wine & More (5401 44th St NW): wine or spirits for a hosting parent. It opened in October 2025 and is open daily 8am to 10pm.
Coffee on campus. The Davenport Lounge is a student-run coffee lounge in the School of International Service building, open from 7:30am on weekdays and closed Saturdays. The Bridge Cafe is a coffee lounge on the second floor of Bender Arena; its hours are posted on its Facebook page.
Tenleytown. Tenley Provisions (4700 Wisconsin Ave NW) has three spots in one room, and takeout covers nearly the whole menu. Sofie's does crepes, pancakes, breakfast burritos and hash brown bowls daily from 8am to 3pm. El Jefe Woodfired Pizza serves wood-fired pies Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 9pm. Bistro Metzger is the dinner option, with fish and chips, banh mi and French onion soup, Tuesday to Sunday from 4:30pm. There is a dog-friendly patio.
Friendship Heights. Wonder (5300 C Wisconsin Ave NW) is a food hall where a group can order from several restaurant brands at once, open until 11:30pm daily. For a parents' dinner, Clyde's of Chevy Chase (5441 Wisconsin Ave) is a big sit-down restaurant beside The Collection, open late every night.
The nearest Metro is Tenleytown–AU on the Red Line. Exit by the east escalator and the free AU shuttle stop is a few yards ahead at 40th and Albemarle Streets. The shuttle runs a continuous loop to campus every 10 to 15 minutes, and you can track it at americanuniversity.transloc.com. Friendship Heights is the next Red Line stop north; its station has an entrance on each corner of Wisconsin and Western Avenues.
Visitors driving in can park in the East Campus surface lot (right-turn-only entrance from Nebraska Avenue) or the underground SIS garage, reached by turning right from Nebraska onto New Mexico Avenue. Parking is $2 an hour or $16 a day, and free after 5pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. In Friendship Heights, the garage at The Collection (5425 Wisconsin Ave) is free for the first 20 minutes, then $3 an hour up to $15 a day.
Stay on the Red Line north past Friendship Heights to Bethesda. The station is about two blocks from Bethesda Row, where Apple Bethesda Row (4860 Bethesda Ave) handles laptop repairs, Moleskine Bethesda (4808 Bethesda Ave) sells notebooks and planners, and Reformation Bethesda (4823 Bethesda Ave) sells womenswear.
For used books, ride the Red Line south to Dupont Circle. Second Story Books (2000 P St NW) is a block from the Metro and open daily until 10pm. For consignment, Georgetown is at the bottom of Wisconsin Avenue, where Current Boutique Georgetown (1068 31st St NW) sells pre-owned designer clothing and takes consignments.
